Chris's 2017 Top Personal training book list

Top Personal Training Books – Reading Lists of 2017

Welcome to the installment of my recommended reading list! My top personal training books. I’ve had a lot of requests from my online members asking what books I’ve read that have shaped my unique training style, so I thought I’d stick with that theme here.

Reading exercises our brains. It helps improves our concentration and our ability to focus. Reading even helps improve our mental health. I read about one book per week and if you want to live a better life, I recommend you do the same. Here is the list of books I would suggest you read if you want to keep Paving Your Path to Perfection!

My Top Personal Training Books

The 1st of Chris's top training book recommendations is THE PRACTICING MIND which demonstrates how to learn skills for any aspect of life

THE PRACTICING MIND

In those times when we want to acquire a new skill or face a formidable challenge we hope to overcome, what we need most are patience, focus, and discipline, traits that seem elusive or difficult to maintain. In this enticing and practical book, Thomas Sterner demonstrates how to learn skills for any aspect of life, from golfing to business to parenting, by learning to love the process.

DRIVE is the 2nd training book in Chris's recommendations that discusses the three elements of true motivation

DRIVE

Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offer smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

START WITH WHY is the 3rd book on Chris's recommendations, about how leaders with great influence think, act and communicate.

START WITH WHY

START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way — and it’s the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Chris's 4th training book recommendation. TALENT IS OVERRATED features the stories of people who achieved world-class greatness through deliberate practice

TALENT IS OVERRATED

Based on scientific research, Talent is Overrated shares the secrets of extraordinary performance and shows how to apply these principles. It features the stories of people who achieved world-class greatness through deliberate practice-including Benjamin Franklin, comedian Chris Rock, football star Jerry Rice, and top CEOs Jeffrey Immelt and Steven Ballmer.

Performing Under Pressure enters Chris's top personal training books collection as it tackles the greatest obstacle to personal success

PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE

Performing Under Pressure enters my top personal training books collection as it tackles the greatest obstacle to personal success, whether at home, on the golf course, or shooting a gun. Despite sports mythology, no one “rises to the occasion” under pressure and does better than they do in practice. The reality is pressure makes us do worse, and sometimes leads us to fail utterly. But there are things we can do to diminish its effects on our performance.

GRIT is number 6 on Chris's personal training book list as it discusses the writer's own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist.

GRIT

Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Duckworth, now a celebrated researcher and professor, describes her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance.

The Compound Effect is based on the principle that decisions shape your destiny. 7th book on Chris's recommendations list.

COMPOUND EFFECT

The Compound Effect is based on the principle that decisions shape your destiny. Little, everyday decisions will either take you to the life you desire or to disaster by default. It’s a distillation of the fundamental principles that have guided the most phenomenal achievements in business, relationships, and beyond. This easy-to-use, step-by-step operating system allows you to multiply your success, chart your progress, and achieve any desire.

The 8th book on Chris's recommendation list is The Little Book of Talent, a field-tested method to improve skills.

THE LITTLE BOOK OF TALENT

The Little Book of Talent is an easy-to-use handbook of scientifically proven, field-tested methods to improve skills—your skills, your kids’ skills, your organization’s skills—in sports, music, art, math, and business. The product of five years of reporting from the world’s greatest talent hotbeds and interviews with successful master coaches, it distills the daunting complexity of skill development into 52 clear, concise directives. This is an essential guide for anyone who ever asked, “How do I get better?”

Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in a lifelong learning and self-improvement challenge. It appealed to Chris and entered his personal training book list.

MAKE IT STICK

Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly. More complex and durable learning comes from self-testing and introducing certain difficulties in practice. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

Chris's 10th book recommendation for personal training is PRACTICE LIKE THIS

PRACTICE LIKE THIS

If you’re alive, you’re trying to get better at something. It could be your golf swing or guitar, parenting or painting, gaming, cooking, or any other skill.  The strategies in my top personal training books are top-shelf, pulled from neuroscience, research on excellence, and world-class masters in many fields, presented in an easy-to-understand style that is sometimes funny and always friendly.
