The Power Of Teamwork – Lessons From a Retired Navy S.E.A.L.

Hey guys, what’s going on, I’m retired Navy SEAL sniper instructor Chris Sajnog and founder of the SEAL training system. In this post, I want to talk to you about the power of teamwork. Now let’s go ahead and get started.

One of the most important aspects of becoming a Navy SEAL is being able to work together as a team. That’s what I want to talk to you about today. I’ve come up with an acronym to help make this easier. That acronym is T.E.A.M.S.

T.E.A.M.S. stands for taking responsibility, encouraging others, asking for help, mastering your job, and sacrificing for others. So let’s go through and talk about those one at a time.

Chris Sajnog explains what the acronym T.E.A.M.S. stands for.

Take Responsibility

Now, the first one is to take responsibility. If you’ve got kids, you see this all the time where they blame everything that happens on somebody else. If you don’t take responsibility for everything in your life, you’re not going to be able to change anything in your life. The only way to change something in your life is to take responsibility for that.

Encourage Others

Next up is E, and that is to encourage others. Now it may sound kind of silly coming from a SEAL team member, that you would need encouragement. But, it’s so helpful to have encouragement.

I ran one marathon in my life. I remember it was like mile 20 and I was feeling really tired. Somebody started cheering for me. I heard somebody say, “Hey, come on you in the blue shorts and black shirt, you can do it.” I was like, “Oh yeah, I can do it!” The power of encouragement is really important. It definitely helps with the power of teamwork.

Ask For Help

So next up is to ask for help. We can only do what we’re trained to do. I think one of the things that really makes SEAL team members so good, is that we’re not afraid to ask for help

When it comes to being a seal, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can get you killed and it can get your teammates killed. You don’t want to be so proud of whatever you want to learn that you’re afraid to ask for help. So make sure you always ask for help.

Master Your Job

Next up is to master your job. That means not trying to master somebody else’s job. You can’t control what somebody else is doing. You can only control what you do. That’s why you need to master your own job. Figure out what your job is on your team, and make sure you master it.

Sacrifice

Last but certainly not least, is to sacrifice for your teammates. Let’s just look at it like your family, your neighborhood, and your friends are all teams you need to think about and what you can do for them.

Maybe you have a friend who needs to go to the airport at four in the morning. Well, just go ahead and do it. Don’t even think twice about it. When you sacrifice for others, it helps the team and makes it stronger

So that is it for my team’s acronym and the power of teamwork. I hope this helps you and your teams out. Until next time, keep paving your path to perfection.
